How to Create a Website

Create Your Own Website

In the creation of your website .. you will have to make another decision. Will your website be a static website or will it be a dynamic website?

A static website is one that contains web pages with fixed content. The site will remain the same until your next update. This type of site is somewhat easier to manage and may easily be designed using a web site builder, such as SiteBuildIt or a website design software, such as Dreamweaver.

A dynamic website is ever changing. There is normally a flow of data in and out of the site. There is often content being brought to the site via feeds, syndicated news services, etc. The site may allow visitors to register (as with a forum) or to leave comments (as with a blog). Typically, blogs will have the newest comments at the top .. with each comment being bumped down the page with the addition of newer comments above.

Dynamic websites tend to take more of your time. As the webmaster, you will be checking in on a regular basis .. replying to comments, answering questions and basically staying on top of things so visitors will hopefully find the information at your site interesting enough to want to subscribe to your RSS feed.

Although a dynamic website demands more of your time, this would be the best solution for a site with content which may require interaction with the visitors. WordPress has become a popular application for building dynamic sites.

Personally, I prefer my static websites .. I like knowing I can set it and forget it, as it were. I can work on adding content and making any updates at my convenience, without feeling pressured to go in and monitor posts and such when I may not have the time.

I have several static websites which I created using Adobe DreamWeaver. I have a couple of dynamic web sites as well, which I created using WordPress .. and two additional sites which are static sites, but I have created a subdomain for the sites and installed WordPress in the subdomain so the sites could have the added feature of an interactive blog.

If you have decided that a static site may best suit your needs .. you may want to check out some of the popular site builders and design software. There is also a huge selection of really great templates available online if you don't want to spend the time in designing your site from scratch.

If you have decided that a dynamic site may best suit your needs you may want to shop around for a WordPress theme. There are a lot of free themes available on the Internet. Most of the free themes are quite plain and very basic. If you want something with a bit more pizzazz, you will want to check out some of the other available WordPress themes as well.
