Before you can build your website.. you will have to do some planning and make a few decisions.

Planning and research are the most important steps in creating a successful web presence. If you are planning to build your site with the intention of doing affiliate marketing.. you need to decide what sort of products you will be promoting.

This is an important step.. as you will want to register a descriptive domain name based on whatever the content will be at your website.

However.. don't make the mistake a lot of beginners make.. they find a product they like first and decide they want to promote that product.. and then waste a lot of time spinning their wheels.. trying to find a market for the product.

Research is Key:
Proper research is one of the main things you need to do before deciding on your product. Be sure there is a fairly large market for the product(s) before making the decision to promote them.

If you just invented the greatest Scratch N Sniff Stickers ever and you want to sell them online.. in doing your research you would find there are only 880 searches monthly for Scratch N Sniff Stickers.

With this knowledge you will realize that no matter how much you would like to build a website and sell your fantastic Scratch N Sniff Stickers .. this is not going to be a very profitable venture.

Always do your research first.. to find out if there is a substantial market for the product before spending a lot of time trying to promote something there may be very little market for.

Some popular niches include: the baby niche, health, weight loss, stop smoking, dating, website hosting, and of course online marketing.. among many others.

If you are just getting started in this business.. online marketing is not something you would be able to promote effectively. It is a bit difficult to tell others how to make money online unless you are experienced at making money online yourself.

It is also a good idea to pick a niche that offers multiple products. This gives you the ability to list a lot of related products on your initial website.. with plenty of possibilities to expand later.. creating additional websites that can all link to each other in a very successful cluster of sites.

Let's say for instance you have decided on the baby niche. You could feature baby shower invitations and gifts, baby clothes, toys, furniture, strollers, car seats and other baby related items on your website.

Later on you may want to add more sites.. one for baby shower invitations and baby shower party supplies, birth announcements, childrens party supplies, etc. Another site could be devoted solely to baby and children's clothing.. and yet another devoted just to baby and children's furniture.

You will want to host each of the sites on a different IP address.. perhaps with different web hosts so it will not be obvious to the search engines that the sites are all owned by the same person. Link the sites to each other successfully and anyone shopping online for baby items of any kind will have to shop no further than your sites to find anything and everything they could possibly want.

None of this will happen overnight, of course.. but with some hard work and a clear plan of what you want and where you are headed you can make it happen. Anyone who tells you that you can make a lot of money without doing any work is lying to you. Making Money online does take work.. but the rewards are certainly worth working for.

Once you have decided on a niche for your website .. and located a few profitable products in that niche .. you can start brainstorming for ideas as to a domain name.

Once you have a list of possibilities, you will need to check on the availability of the domain names. A lot of the names may already be taken .. but as you are checking on them you will come up with many alternative ideas to consider.

A dot com domain should be your first choice .. followed by a dot net. If all else fails you can always add a dash between the words.
